At Davidson, Kerns holds the single season record of Homeruns (17), RBI's (61) and total bases (135). His senior year he batted .373 and hit 17 homeruns while only striking out 19 times.

He has worked with numerous top draft choices from their early days in Little League up to and through the Major League Draft.

In 2008, Kerns helped coach an 18U American team in an overseas tournament in Oldenzaal, Holland. The team won the entire tournament and returned to the states with a gold medal.
